House unanimously approves Rep. Mary Dye's bill to extend heavy-haul corridor into Washington state

Today, the state House unanimously approved House Bill 2807, which would designate certain roadways in the 9th District as heavy-haul corridors. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mary Dye, was approved by a vote of 96-0.

“We have seen extensive growth in our port areas, so having this designation on some of our district roadways would serve an essential component for economic development for Eastern Washington,” said Dye, R-Pomeroy. “The heavy-haul corridor in Lewiston, Idaho would be extended into Washington state, which would be beneficial for facilitating movement of agricultural goods and commodities to our ports.”

Dye’s bill would require the Washington State Department of Transportation to designate certain portions of State Routes 128 and 193 - 4.5 miles of Wawawai Road from Port of Lewiston through to the Port of Whitman at Wilma, on the north side of the Snake River - as a heavy-haul corridor for the movement of overweight vehicles not exceeding 129,000 pounds.

The Whitman County Port Commission brought the issue to Dye’s attention because the Idaho side of the port corridor is already designated as a heavy-haul corridor and this harmonizes the weight limits on a road that serves both ports.

This bill now moves forward to the Senate for further consideration.
