Public hearing scheduled Thursday for Pike transportation bills
The House Transportation Committee will take testimony Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Olympia on two transportation-related bills proposed by Rep. Liz Pike, R-Camas.
House Bill 2414 would create a new bi-state bridge legislative work group to seek new affordable options to relieve traffic congestion and improve freight mobility between Clark County, WA and Portland, OR.
"Now that the deeply-flawed Columbia River Crossing project is dead and behind us, we need to move forward with new affordable solutions. Hanjin and Hapag-Lloyd have pulled out of Terminal 6 at the Port of Portland and hundreds of thousands of those shipping containers are now being diverted to other ports and carried by trucks onto the local interstate highways. We need to work to get a new plan in place that will address these and future congestion problems," said Pike, who serves on the House Transportation Committee. "I am working with Representative Sharon Wylie to bring leaders together from Washington and Oregon, and from both parties, to look ahead for new, affordable ways to get Southwest Washington moving again."
House Bill 2417 would increase requirements for receiving an intermediate driver's license, including a logbook to verify at least 50 hours of driving experience, including 10 at night.
"This is the first of several new driver safety bills I have introduced as a result of a Teen Driving Safety Task Force I created this past summer. The task force explored prevention measures against fatalities and serious injury accidents involving young drivers, and this legislation is the result of those meetings," said Pike. "In 2013, there were 64 serious injuries and 24 fatalities in Clark County involving drivers between the ages of 16 and 25. We want to bring those numbers down and protect our young people, as well as other drivers on our highways."
The public hearings will be held Thursday, Jan. 21, 3:30 p.m. in the House Transportation Committee, House Hearing Room B, John L. O'Brien Building. The public is welcome to attend and testify.
