Rep. Manweller authors bill to transfer Royal Slope railroad from state to Port of Royal Slope
Rep. Matt Manweller, R-Ellensburg, has introduced legislation authorizing the transfer of the Royal Slope railroad right-of-way from the state transportation department to the Port of Royal Slope.
The bill, HB 1586, would allow the Port of Royal Slope to maintain the right-of-way and contract with an operator to provide service on the railroad.
"What we want to do is take this old railroad that hasn't run in a few years, and give it back to local citizens," said Manweller. "If the Port of Royal Slope wants to make a go of it, that would be great -- it could potentially bring jobs, tax revenues and economic development to the community. If not, then after five years it will revert back to the state."
HB 1586 has been referred to the House Transportation Committee.
