House approves Rep. Muri's bill for special license plates
During floor action Friday, the state House passed legislation that would create the Washington State Wrestling special vehicle license plate. Rep. Dick Muri, R-Steilacoom the bill’s sponsor, says these special plates would help promote and support college wrestling in Washington state.
Due in part to a lack of funding, there is currently a shortage of college wrestling programs in Washington state. In order to remain competitive many high school students involved in wrestling are forced to attend college out of state.
"In many ways this is both an opportunity and education bill," said Muri. “This legislation would potentially fund one 4-year, or more, wrestling programs for men and women, bringing more opportunities for students to participate in this great sport and keeping our best wrestling athletes right here in the state of Washington."
After the costs associated with the special license plates are recovered, funds would go to the Washington State Wrestling Foundation to allocate funds for the new and existing college wrestling programs.
House Bill 1830 was approved by the House on a 91-4 vote, and is on the way to the Senate Transportation Committee where it awaits a hearing.
